John & Diana Colgate |
John Colgate grew up driving old American cars with friends around the sand dunes of Long Island. His first car, a MGTD, led him to appreciate sports cars culminating with his first “real” car, an Austin Healey 100-M. John and his 100-M raced at Lime Rock , Bridgehampton, and Watkins Glen throughout the late 50’s.
His steady driving and consistent ability to finish every race brought him to the attention of the BMC distributor in New York. John joined the BMC-Team Healey effort after being a successful SCCA campaigner in his Austin Healey 100-M.
He left the BMC team in 1960, but continued to race Austin Healeys for Donald Healey, most notably at Sebring with the 3000 MKI now owned by Bill Bolton. Later he drove Mini Coopers and retired from active racing to pursue his personal business that include owing the largest independent Mercedes Benz dealership in the metro New Your City area.
Last year John returned to racing when he participated in the Skip Barber Formula Ford series. This year he will compete in four races a Lime Rock. John is married with six children and still lives on Long Island. |

Ray & Gay Stone |
Before the TV series, “Car 54 Where Are You”, Bugeye Sprite serial number 27531 was competing with number 54 on it’s side. Number 54 continued on the Sprite for over 40 years, transcending a career from road car for a high school student, ice racer and hillclimber to multiple National SCCA championships in SCCA H Production.
Ray started his racing career in 1958 while in high school in an MG-TD. He quickly changed to the Bugeye Sprite in 1960 and ran New England unsanctioned races, hillclimbs and ice races until old enough to enter SCCA races. In 1963 he began his SCCA career running over 200 races, with 2 national Runoffs championships, and multiple Runoffs podium positions. Most of his races were in the Sprite, but also included rides in a Trans-Am Volvo, Caterham, and SAAB. Ray also officiated in numerous SCCA positions in the Northeast and Southeast for over 30 years.
Ray’s Sprite is currently in “retirement” and resting pending a possible return to vintage racing. |

1-29-08 Hi Rick,
My flights are booked - arriving Philly on Friday 16 May (may get to Carlisle in time for a quick drink in the evening as I've got an earlier flight than I've managed before by 2 hours). Returning from Philly on the Wednesday 21st a tea time flight - about 1600hrs or something.
As you know this time because Faye has to be at school and Isobel has a job at the school I will be coming on my own.
You can announce this anytime now and I guess I'd better get a move on sorting out a trophy......... (at least the base has been completed for a couple of years).
It may also be possible - too soon to say at present but it will be close - that a new revision of my Sprite/Midget book will be out in time for the meet. At the moment the publisher has it but hasn't started work on it. They need to in the next week or so for publishing to make it for the meet.
Regards,
Daniel
